From what I've gathered, there are three types of concerts one can attend: musicians, singers, and performers.
Musicians are those that depend on their instrumental skills to jam endlessly. Les Claypool and the Flying Frog Band definately fit into this mold, jamming for two hours with about 10 minutes totals of vocals... George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic was a similar experience.
Singers are just that, bands who may not be the best players, but they have that distinctive voice, tone, infliction that separates themselves from others. Examples that I've seen include Dave Matthews Band, U2, and chick performers, like Jewel.
Finally, performers are a mix of both, but they also add something more to the show that makes it truly memorable. Obviously Barenaked Ladies fall under this category, but pretty much all punk bands I've seen do to. They use the stage to their fullest and interact with the audience the entire time.
Personaly, my preference is performers & singers, I rarely will ever choose to go see a musician. However, I surprisingly really enjoyed Les Claypool. I was definately in a state of mind where I was feeling the music, he was wailing on that bass hard. Not a band I would choose to pay alot of money to see again, but it was fun.
