Giving Back

So, a cool thing that my company does, is that every year, they set up a day (this year, actually back-to-back days) in which their employees can take off work to do something to give back to the community. It's a nice set-up, and this year we had over 400 people volunteer form our home office alone. Very sweet. Now, while I've been here for over four years, this is the first time that I've taken part in it. This is basically because of two things; one, I usually had alot of work/studying that had to be done quickly around that time, and two, I'm just lazy. Still, I felt like taking part this year.

Anyway, my team's assignment was up at Point Reyes National Park, which is just a really beautifully backyard park which has some great sites. When I signed up, the description was to clean up the trails, so I was predicting picking up trash, and maybe some weeding. Turns out the ranger who had set up the assignment was no longer there, so the description had changed a bit. Now, our assignment was to go out to a nearby lake/marsh, and cut down tall stalks that shoot out called tule, which the Coast Miwok Indians from the area used to use to create habitats, boats, and rope. So, we did that for a few hours, and then returned to a mock village called Kule Loklo to lay out the three dozen or so bundles we brought back to dry out. The work was pretty invigorating and fun, and it was cool to know the work was giving back to the community.

Afterwards, the park rangers who were directing us gave a quick history lesson of the Coast Miwok tribe that was just awesome, taking us into a recreated circle house, teaching us the proper entrance to the spiritual place, and some interesting stories of the area. They ended by thanking us and reminding us that now that we had helped cultivate the supplies for the village, we were now a part of the history... a tad cliche, but it made me feel pretty good. All in all, the day was just amazing.

Good for you man. I give back to my community by not parking in front of the communal mailbox.

O)n a serious note, Kamin is right. It's always more rewarding than you thought it'd be.
