What, Me Worry?: Wilma Edition

As many of you know, I've got a bunch of family down in Florida, primarily the Keys. With this year's hurricanes, nearly every week I've had some type of freak out concerning their safety, but thankfully, they've gotten through it all fairly unscathed. So, you can imagine that after all of the huge storm that've come through there as of late, I wasn't too worried... despite this being one of the worst storms on record, it looked to me it was breaking up and wouldn't hit that hard.

Yeah, not so much.

Went to bed last night a bit worried... had talked to friends and family, and they're worries started to transfer to me, and this morning I got a call from my mother, and with sand being wiped outta my eyes, I find out that their roof has been ripped off, battery power is running low on the phones, and the 12 foot storm surge? Well, seeing as my mother's place is 10 feet above the water, that leaves 2 extra feet to creep into the first floor... yeah, that sucks.

Thankfully, it sounds like their good, health-wise... only thing I'm worried about is that my sister got out in time on Friday, but I haven't been able to get ahold of her yet, and it looks like the town she escaped to had gotten hit pretty hard. Fingers crossed that everyone gets through this okay... if you could send some mojo down that way (is that less presumptuous than asking for prayers?), I'd be much appreciative... hope any of your friends and family got through it okay.

My thoughts are with you and your family. Let us know if there's anything we can do.

John:

This is the only way hI have to reach you right now - I have not heard from Amanda since the Wilma was about to hit her area.

I have had a chance to get into Key West - my office is ok and has power.

I am charging my cell. We are hoping to be able to get some temporary roof put on - but water damage is so severe we will have to vacate.

Things we lost are unimportant - my car is gone - so is Karen;s Manda;s seems to have faired better - but who knows.

Should anyone hear from Manda - tell her to call anyone.

I love you very much and for once am glad you are not here.

John - I spoke with Amanda yesterday. She's ok and is on the way back down to KW this morning. She stayed at a hotel in Miami Beach last night. If they can find gas they should get back to KW sometime today. I'm not sure what she'll find, but it probably won't be too good from what she said happened to the house. Plus who knows about working again anytime soon either.

Tarp on the roof - roof off the yard - Karen has a new car so we have transportation - FEMA lines are 5 hours long - FEMA out of food - no problem with water - elecricty back on - three bedrooms total losses - Justine has no shoes left - too many cars for Progressive to come out and inspect - just sending tow trucks - 15 weddings cancelled so far - 7 on the 5th and 8 on the 11th that still have hopes of coming - things are looking up - we have been blessed by Angels everywhere watching out for us - we will survive this bump in the road. Manda has a place to stay till Wednesday - Danny's family have temporary housing - We will survive and blossum from this experience - but rememind me to never stay here again - the new word is evacuate!

Hello John - sorry to keep in touch via the blog - but house phones down - no outgoing e-mails -cell phones are off and on - but - now breath deeply and relax - again we are all alive - but....exactly one week after Wilma took off the roof - we werde hit by the most rain in recorded history and well I guess tarps do not stop 4+ inches of torrential rains with no electricty (again) - Karen - Jackie - Me and Bob were in the house when the electricty shut down from Key Largo to Key West - while we slept the ceilings fell down around us - anything we had been able to salvage from Wilma was a complete loss after the rains - I ran to Jackies room to make sure she was ok after hearing a very very very large bang - the ceiling actually landed directly on her bed - luckily she had moved into the living room when her ceiling started to "crackle". We are best reached during the day at the office - we love you and are eternally gratful that you are in CA.
