Shut Your Mouth Critics, It's Fantastic
I'm completely flabbergasted at the lambasting that Fantastic Four is getting from critics. I was able to catch it tonight with a large group (my sister, parents, uncle, and grandparents), and while not everyone loved it (unlike my sister and I) no one hated it, all agreeing that there was some really fun parts.
Most of the things I read compared it to Batman Begins, which right there, automatically makes me zone out on there thoughts. It's like comparing Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Hitchhiker's Guide because they were both based on a popular series of books. The two comic flicks are not only completely different superhero tales, their two completely different types of films. Batman Begins works so well because it's adult, dark, violent, and scary. The Fantastic Four works as a sitcom of a family with superpowers.
Thankfully, after an opening weekend that grossed more than 20 million of most estimates, I'm happy to see that families weren't driven away. I would never take a kid to see Batman Begins... that's almost Oscar-worthy in it's approach. Fantastic Four on the other hand is gonna sweep the Nickelodeon awards this year... the kids in the audience loved it. And after 18 weeks of down ticket sales, the kids certainly needed something fun to watch
Are there faults with the flick? Of course... but it's certainly not as extreme as others are saying. I'll admit, I was not expecting much from the movie, especially the costume for The Thing, but damn if I wasn't completely sucked in by the make-up job... I was actually watching Hulk early this afternoon, and if I had to choose, I'd pick Chiklis's costume to the CGI any day. The problems of the flick almost all surface... some continuity glitches between cuts for a subpar director. A hilarious costume design choice for a woman in negligee standing in the middle of a NY street. Blatantly stealing the villain subplot from Spider-Man... okay, that one's pretty bad. I felt kinda bad for Julian McMahon... the guy's a talented actor, and he really only has the chance to Bond-villain the greatest bad guy in the Marvel universe.
But I was able to forget all that, because the family dynamic of the team was believable. The biggest fault I had with the Spider-Man flicks is that the wise-cracking was pathetic... here, the interaction between Johnny and Ben is better than I could ever imagine... Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis fucking own this flick. Own.
Ioan Gruffudd... honestly, I have no idea who the guy is... he was adequate... the truth is, Reed is only a good character when he's a leader, or when he's feeling guilty for his actions... every other moment of the movie (and the comics) with him is pretty boring.
Jessica Alba... well, there's clearly a bunch of haters out there, and I don't know why. The girl is obviously talented. She carried a damn fun show by herself for two years. She's been in two of the most fun movies of the year (Sin City DVD and sequel can't get here soon enough). Afterwards, my sister mentioned that she couldn't believe Alba could act that well... the chick has staying power.
Anyway, it's late (I've got a big day of lounging by the pool scheduled for tomorrow) and I need to get to bed. I'm going out on a limb and givin' this flick 4 out of 5 stars. Yeah, I'm surprised, too.

Good to hear that you liked it. I'm torn. Sometimes I think it's going to suck and others, I'm stoked. I'll probably have to wait for DVD much like SinCity, but this time, because of the baby and not sloth.
Speaking of superheroes, you missed a good game last night. Two-Face and his thugs/cops (evil/good) were taken on by 3 teams. #1-Teen Titans Robin, Cyborg and Speedy. #2-Spidey enemies Venom & Mysterio. #3-My baddies team of Bullseye, Doc Oc, a Sentinel Trooper, and Moloid the Unstoppable. It was a really good game. And if you can get me your address before you leave, either by phone or e-mail, I'll try and send you that Spidey fig for your chips. If I don't see you, have a safe trip back. It was good hanging out.
