Movie Reviews: Holz Is The New Black Edition

Since I haven't been in too much of a blogging mood as of late, here's a smattering of thoughts on flicks I've seen recently... and BTW, dyed my hair again over the weekend, to a Shiny Black... almost looks like a bluish hue, hope to get a pic up on MySpace this week...

V For Vendetta - Saw this last weekend, and really enjoyed it. I have not read the graphic novel, but have heard enough about it that I was incredibly stoked for the flick, and it didn't disappoint. The story at the heart of it is very good, and while it is getting some detractions from the right as a criticism of Bush, I think it's only a criticism because the act of fascism is damn scary, no matter what time period. As the original story was in response to Britain leaning totalitarian in the 80s, it just goes to show the same problems continue to resurface. Natalie Portman was excellent in the flick, my favorite thing from her after Garden State, and Hugo Weaving did an amazing job without ever having seen his face (and the fact we didn't even have the soul-ful eyes of the Phantom of the Opera just made it that much more impressive). The only critique I had was that the ending seemed incredibly rushed, especially for such a drawn out (in a good way) plot. IV out of V Stars (Night Nurse liked it even more than me, giving it V out of V! I'm wondering if I should introduce her to Watchmen yet... hmmmm...)

Inside Man - About time Spike Lee sold out! The guy's a talented director, no doubt, but holy hell he has made some bad movies as of late. Thankfully, this flick is just as good as the trailers made it out to be. A stellar cast (including yet another masked-actor Clive Owen), and an intriguing plot totally grabbed me throughout the entire film. However, while V For Vendetta's ending seemed rushed, this one had an ending of Peter Jackson-y proportions, going on forever. Also, not entirely a drawback, but I certainly wish it would have been revealed just how the robber's knew about the contents of the safe deposit box. Oh well, can't have everything. 3.5 out of 5 Stars

Just Friends - Night Nurse and I hung out with Old School and Ecstacy on Friday, and seeing as Old School pretty much hate eachother's tastes in movies, we were able to settle on a Ryan Reynolds flick as a compromise, one of our few crossover actors. Anyway, this movie was hilarious, much better than it had any right to be. It really surprised us how much we were laughing, as it hadn't don't too well in theaters, but the whole movie was excellent. I'm truly amazed that Reynolds hasn't had that breakout role yet, as the dude is not only a comic genius, but a damn talented actor. And Anna Faris should be in every comedy made, her timing and willingness to make a fool out of herself are priceless. My personal favorite part of the movie, though, was the interaction between the two brothers, just beating the holy hell outta eachother. Made me miss my sister. 4 out 5 Stars.

V has some pretty confusing trailers. I have no idea what it's about, but I might check it out. I don't like Spike Lee so forget that one. I think Just Friends has potential. Thinking about checking that out since I think Krista might like it too.

Just Friends is great as a date movie, I think Krista will really like it. V is a futuristic dictatorship being taken down by a revolutionary... I highly recommend, an excellent comic book adaptation (even though I haven't read the book)
