It's Official

  • The new Kanye West album kicks serious ass. Pick it up.

  • I have broken the 20 lb. loss barrier before my "official" Monday weigh-in. I'm totally digging the Nutrisystem lifestyle... plus it's turned me into a peanut butter fiend.

  • This year's television season is a geek's wet dream. Expect the next installment of The Alien Sitting In My House soon.

  • I now look less evil than I used to:

  • Mafia games are much more fun when you survive past night one.

  • I may be a data monkey, but I thoroughly hate monotonous repetiive work... I can't wait until this gorram assignment I and my team has is over.

  • My new softball team is not invincible, as our bat sucked last night in a 14-6 loss. Oh well, at least I go someone out at home and strike out the same guy twice.

Holz: Powerhouse Hitter/Hittee

So, as I mentioned in my big entry a few days ago, my work-league softball lost the championship game, as has become almost custom over the past few years. However, the following week my city-league softball team started off with a bang.

To begin with, lemme set the tone on just how the city league differs from my work league. First, instead of having a minimum 3 women players on a team, the city league switches out male and female batters every other line-up position. Second, if a male batter is walked - no matter the count, he automatically gets 2 bases (with two outs, the next female is allowed to walk immediately). Third, this league does not use flight restricted balls.

That third one is the key to my performance on Thursday. As I arrived, I was asked immediately if I up for lead-off position. Apparently no one wanted to go first, but I was game, so - to excuse the pun - I stepped up to the plate. I can't remember if I took a pitch or not, probably did, but my first swing, the ball sailed out into centerfield, over the outfielder's head and kept going. It eventually bumped up against a soccer goal far out there, but by then I was rounding third for an opening home run to start the game. Not bad.

Cut to my next at bat, and I swing at the first pitch sent to me. Ball launches straight down the left field line, over the outfielder's head, even though they were giving me respect after my first at bat. Ball keeps rolling into the trees, and I'm approaching home for my second home run in a row. Too say I was surprised is the understatement of the year.

The rest of my batting that game wasn't bad. I hit another deep ball that was caught my next at bat, but it scored a run, so I get the sacrifice anyway. My final at bat I was able to get the ball on the ground for a RBI base hit. Overall great hitting day for me, and something that really mae me feel good after a less than stellar previous season. Here's hoping I caught it up.

Fielding-wise, I didn't do too bad either. The strike zone is a bit small in this league, as I don't have the extra two inches on both sides of the plate to target, so I have to send it fairly straight down the lane. Still only walked 2 batters, struck out 2 more, and we ended up routing them 21-7 in 6 innings. Pretty good start for a team I was a bit worried about joining.

Only real annoyance of the game was I got hurt in the fourth inning from a throw-in by my outfielder, who was trying to make a play at home. The throw was low and fast, and I knew it wasn't gonna be fielded, so I tried cutting it off. Problem was, it took a bad hope, and nailed me hard in the shin. It was paining me quick, but I got ice on it immediately, and currently it's really just tender, no bumps or anything. All weekend though I hobbled around, not because of my hurt shin, but because I pulled a calf muscle while hobbling around during the game. Yeah, that sucked, but at least it's almost 100%.

Finally, two updates from last week. Dieting-wise, looks like I've hit my first plateau, as I only lost a pound over the week, but that's probably because Kris and I really cheated for the first time, heading out to a nice restaurant with friends on Saturday night, then we headed out to the Wedding Expo on Sunday, which had alot of booths giving out samples of wedding cakes and sweets. We didn't overindulge, but we did have enough to easily break the 2,000 calorie days we'd been avoiding. Still, back on the horse against this week, and I'm shooting for 221 by next Monday.

Second update is on my hair. Yes, I cut it, a little bit shorter than I'm used to, but thankfully my hair grows pretty fast. Haven't shaved yet, and Kris and I both agree I work a goatee pretty well, but I imagine I'll even be slicing that off in the next couple days, give my face some breathing time before engagement pictures.
